March 26th 2006 - Okay, this site is suffering from a bad case of neglect. I'm going to try and resurect it but I can't make any promises. Oh, and the URL stephen.pugh.net will stop working in about a week. tanitatikaram.net is the only address from now on.
April 1st 2005 - The Naïve Records web site has some Tanita related materials including four tracks from Sentimental. They list the release date as 12th April (for France I guess?). Still no sign of a UK or US release as far as I can tell.
February 10th 2005 - There's going to be a new album. Let me say that again:
Tanita Tikaram is back with a collection of beguiling new songs, entitled, Sentimental, released this Spring on Nave Records.
Articulate and engagingly self deprecating, Tanitas aims for the new album were very simple: I wanted to get back to things I had forgotten, fundamental ideas about keeping things simple and interesting and looking at how the voice sits with other instruments, says Tanita, Ideas I felt I lost but which maybe I just knew naturally when I was seventeen.
From V2 Scandinavia.
Release date is given as April 20th 2005.
I can only find a French language site for Naïve Records which doesn't appear to mention Tanita at all.
Meanwhile, the official web site at www.tanita-tikaram.com now claims to be coming very soon, and has a picture that looks like it might be the new album cover.
February 20th 2004 - Sorted out the links page: added new ones and deleted dead ones. Playing with some ideas for a redesign, but where can I find the time?
No real Tanita news, just regular rumours about recording new songs - she must have about a dozen albums' worth by now if all the rumours are true. Now wouldn't that be heaven?
August 15th 2002 - According to a mailing list message Tanita has started working with Asgard (the management company she left in 1997) again and a new album is on its way. The new songs are supposedly the best ever. Questions that spring to mind are - which record lebel will the album be released on; and are the songs recorded last year in Italy going to be on the album?
February 11th 2002 - Updated the links page and taken over the running of the Tanita Tikaram Web Ring. Sorting through my archive of Tanita material to see if I have any pictures or articles that aren't on-line yet. Still no further word on the next album.
August 21st 2001 - Added a 'new' review, corrected a few errors and carried out some tidying up of the links page.
April 9th 2001 - Further clarification of the message below:
"Tanita has a new manager and she's in Italy putting down the tracks for her new album with Marco. She doesn't have a record deal yet so I'm not sure that anything will be released in the near future but hopefully soon."
April 3rd 2001 - A message from Séverine Berman was posted to the Tanita Tikaram mailing list:
"Tanita is in Italy finishing off her new album and she has a new manager too which is very exciting! It's Jazz Summers - he's managed the likes of Wham and The Verve so this will be brilliant for Tanita. I'm sure there will be a new album out very soon so keep posted to the mailing list."
November 24th 2000 - Séverine Berman has confirmed that Tanita is living in North London and writing material for a new album.
Fans of Ramon Tikaram should check out the Novemeber 29th issue of Now magazine for an interview. It's mostly about his latest acting project but does briefly mention the six year old rift with Tanita, which he says he can't talk about 'for legal reasons'.
October 25th 2000 - Moved all the music links off the home page and onto their own page. Makes navigation a bit less overwhelming. Added a bunch of new images, they all seem to be standard publicity shots so I hope I haven't stolen anything I shouldn't have.
October 24th 2000 - The mailing list was recently full of rumours: that Tanita is living in North London and has written half the songs for a new album to be released next year. I'll let you know when I have any more definite info.
June 2nd 2000 - Added search functionality, courtesy of FreeFind. Hope it works. Let me know how you find it.
April 25th 2000 - Latest rumours say that Tanita is currently writing (but not yet recording) songs with a possible new album sometime in 2001. No hint of any live dates in the near future.
February 15th 2000 - Well, a few quiet days at work has let me do the update to the site. No major changes ("if it ain't broke, don't fix it") but some small cosmetic tweaks. Also been through the old files and e-mails and added four more reviews, two interviews and one picture.
February 7th 2000 - It's been very quiet recently. No Tanita news worth reporting. If you have any pictures or articles that aren't already here please feel free to send them in (translations of foreign articles welcome), but please don't just steal stuff from other web sites.
I'm going to revamp and update the web site slightly. You may have already noticed a few changes. Please e-mail me with any comments or suggestions.
March 9th 1999 - If I Ever will not be released in the UK.
March 2nd 1999 - It's all quiet at the moment. The USA is still waiting for The Cappuccino Songs to be released and the UK is still waiting for If I Ever to be released.
I've won another award:
Ouch, that logo looks nasty on non-white backgrounds.
And Morten Edh has started a Tanita Tikaram Web Ring.
November 19th 1998 - The latest from Séverine is as follows:
"On 30-11-98 Tanita will be appearing on the Swiss TV show megaherz performing If I Ever.
There has also been alot of German radio promotion in the last week so listen out for that and If I Ever is due to be released in both Germany and Switzerland on December the 7th."
October 6th 1998 - Finally done some updates. Have a look around and see what you can find!
Tanita will be performing a 20 minute set as part of the Amnesty International gig on October the 16th in the Westminster Central Hall.
September 7th 1998 - The latest news from Séverine:
"This is just a quick note to say that Tanita is doing fine and the album is coming out this Monday in the UK. She has been busy doing promotion in Europe and the next single to be released everywhere, except Sweden who are releasing I Don't Wanna Lose At Love, is If I Ever. We are looking to do some live dates in the UK, France and Italy but this is still all in discussion at the moment. The next single in the UK will probably be after Christams and it will probably be If I Ever. We have a definite release in the US which is January 1999 on Island. We are also looking to really promote the album in South America."
August 19th 1998 - I Don't Want to Lose at Love came out on Monday and I've added scans of the covers to the pictures page (and also split that page in two to make it less of a bandwidth monster). Also added a few bits and pieces to the discography, b-sides, and reviews sections.
July 15th 1998 - The latest news from Séverine at Stephen Budd:
"Just to let you know that Tanita is doing a festival in Italy called Reconate on July 24th. She will be performing 'Twist...' live, just her and her guitar."
"On July 29th she will be on the National Lottery in the UK performing the new single I Don't Wanna Lose At Love. There is a new radio version to this which none of you will have heard as it does not appear on the album. It is f*****g great though you will all love it!"
"The new single is released in the UK on August the 10th. There are no planned dates for the release of this in Europe yet. Stop Listening is still picking up interest in Europe and therefore a second single will come later."
June 30th 1998 - Lots of stuff to tell you: Several of the national Polygram websites have material up connected with The Cappuccino Songs, for example the German site.
Some of the regulars on the mailing list met Tanita recently in Warsaw, amongst other titbits they learned all about the next single:
CD1
CD2
- I Don't Wanna Lose At Love
- I Don't Wanna Lose At Love - ADF remix
- There's Only One Boy In The Crowd (a new song)
On the cover there will be a very sexy picture of TT in a dress with black and red (?) spots, her head tilting slightly backwards.
- I Don't Wanna Lose At Love
- I Don't Wanna Lose At Love - another remix
- In Your Time (a new song)
June 16th 1998 - Well, the album is out in Europe. I've not seen it yet, but I have been busy and there are some new articles, reviews and pictures on the site. One bit of news that I've not mentioned before is that Tanita will be at the Sopot Festival in Poland on the 21/22 August.
May 29th 1998 - Well, the single has been out since Monday (at least in some parts of the world). There seem to be two CD singles, CD 1 (MUMCD102) has Stop Listening, The Cappuccino Song, Feeling is Gone and Stop Listening (directors cut). This last track having been remixed by Ashley Beale. CD 2 (MUMCX102) has Stop Listening plus new remixes of Twist in My Sobriety and Good Tradition.
I've added scans of the new CD covers to the Pictures section. More updates soon.
May 18th 1998 - The hard working Séverine informs us of another forthcoming appearance:
Tanita is on The Mag this weekend, which is on Channel 5. An interview with a short clip of the video.
May 14th 1998 - Séverine at Stephen Budd has taken the time to explain why Tanita didn't appear on the Big Breakfast as previously stated:
I am really sorry that Tanita did not appear on the Big Breakfast, but unfortunately at the last minute they decided they wanted to have the exclusive on terrestial TV, which was not possible as we had already confirmed Fully Booked, which was too late too pull. She will however do something hopefully on the next single.
Tanita will definitely be appearing this Monday on This Morning which is on ITV, in the UK, at 10.40am. I hope this makes it up to you and I apologise for taking so long to write this message but I have been away with Tanita in Paris for promotion purposes, which by the way went very well.
More info as it comes.
May 7th 1998 - And here's the latest news, courtesy of Séverine at Stephen Budd:
There are no planned tours at the moment. Tanita is however doing a gig at the Mean Fiddler on May 26 for Amnesty International. It will just be a short gig of 4 songs, 1 old one and 1 new one in a semi-acoustic way.
The single is being released on May 25 and we are not yet sure about the album, sometime in August I think, with a second single in July.
Tanita will be on Fully Booked which is on BBC 2 on Sunday morning, I am not sure what time, for just a performance of the new single. She is also on Big Breakfast on Monday, which is Channel 4 7am to 9am. She is doing a house interview and having a chat with Zig and Zag.
March 17th 1998 - Marco Sabiu has come with the goods and posted the track listing for the new album.
April 22nd 1998 - In the run-up to the new album I've started work on a major clean-up. I've added yet another article, this one from Sweden. I've also added some more pictures and you'll already have noticed the new background.
The picture on the right was nicked from the dotmusic website. They've got an article about the new single that's certainly an interesting read.
As far as I know Stop Listening, the new single, is released on May 18th. The second single may be I Don't Wanna Lose At Love. The album is scheduled for release June 15th.
April 12th 1998 - The release date of the first single has been pushed back to May 18th. I've added another article, this one from the February 1995 edition of Diva.
February 24th 1998 - A huge great big e-mail from Tanita herself to the mailing list answering some questions asked by list member Patrick Schwarz:
Dear All,Just taking 5 minutes out from doing the Bsides to the new single 'Stop Listening'..........
1. Can you tell us about any of the new songs--titles, what they are about, type of music, influences, etc.
Most of the songs are about cappuccino and seduction and people having affairs and feeling not too guilty (it's nearly the year 2000) basically, the joys of life. Marco and I have been greatly influenced by Lucio Battisti, Fleetwood Mac, Marisa Monte, Tom Jobim (as much as he is influenced by Chopin) John Barry, Morricone, Khaled, Francoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg & Veronique Sanson too name but a few. We really wanted to write songs that were very instant and sort of sexy. I felt this freedom with Marco to be cheesy sexy because he is Italian and ''understands''.
2. Besides your hard work on this new upcoming album, what have you been doing for the last three years?
I spend alot of my time with friends, in museums, going to the cinema, etc. In reality, although it seems I have been three years absent from music, I'm always working on stuff. Also, I enjoy very much a good social life and music is very social for me. I don't have a great desire to feel like I'm doing something. Does that make any sense, or do I just sound lazy? My partner thinks that I am the laziest person in the world.
3. Who are you listening to these days?
I guess alot of the stuff listed in number one, as well as Abba, Gladys Knight, Shirley Bassey, Paolo Conte, Wendy Carlos, Sakamoto, etc.
4. What are you reading these days?
I read a wonderful book recently called 'The Invention of Curried Sausage'by Uwe Timm, it might be difficult to find but I think it is extroadinary. Now reading Ester Freud's 'Gaglow'.
5. We saw some photos of you from several months ago--Are you still growing out your hair?
Not exactly, it's sort of a bob. Bit over short hair, have explored boy side but I'm 28 years old now and, well, y'know.......
6. Will you be touring to support your album?
Will be doing small showcases in May, websites will have all details as soon as they are confirmed.
ANYWAYS,THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND QUESTIONS.
LOTS OF LOVE
T-BAG...........
February 20th 1998 - We've won an award! This web site is Seven Wonder's That's Entertainment Site of the Week on February 20th.
February 11th 1998 - Marco Sabiu, the co-writer and producer of Tanita's new album has recently joined the mailing list and has fowarded the following snippets about release dates:
"The release date for the first single is May 4 and sounds massive....believe me."
"I think they are still negotiating the release date in the USA. the Album is going to be released in Japan beginning of May and then the European release is scheduled for June 1."
January 23rd 1998 - Here's the latest news from Tanita's management:
"Just to let you know that the new album sounds amazing, to say the least. We're looking at a first single release at end April with the album a couple of weeks later."
October 25th 1997 - I'm making some reorganisations to the way this site is organised. The larger versions of the photos and the older articles will now be housed in an archive on GeoCities but they'll be linked to directly from here, so you shouldn't notice any real difference. (You may notice things loading a bit faster or slower depending on where in the world you are and what your connection is like.) I've also added some more articles and some more lyrics to the collaborations section, oh and there are a couple of new web sites to check out.
Tanita sent me an e-mail and here it is:
"Hi Steve. My name is Tanita and I'd like to say thank you for your great home page. I'm in WOODSTOCK NY recording at Stephen's [Hague] studio. There are lots of deers and trees and bugs but the weather is wonderful and I think it is my happiest album to date. I'm also very happy because my good buddy and collaborator is here MARCO SABIU (he does not really like the name Rapino) and we've written new songs here too. Anyways, thank you again and I hope you'll like the new album. Incidentally, saw great concerts this summer, Gladys Knight and Cheb Khaled so everything is really shakandoody,
BIG LOVE T.T."
October 3rd 1997 - I've received some very good news from Stephen Budd Management:
"Last month Tanita signed a record deal with Mother Records. She has been writing new material for the last year or so and is at present recording the material for what will be her new album which is due for release early next year. Tanita is working with Marco Rapino, who co-wrote most of the album with her, and Stephen Hague at his studio in Woodstock. She is due back towards the middle of the month where they will finish recording the album in the UK."
June 24th 1997 - Tanita recently performed in Budapest, Hungary. She played just four songs: Twist In My Sobriety, And I think Of You, a possible new song (my informant didn't recognise it) and I Might Be Crying. The first two were later shown on Hungarian television. When asked about the possibilty of a new album she said something along the lines of you'll have to wait a little and/or that she is making it "just for fun".
Oh, and apparently she's growing her hair again.
May 29th 1997 - This interesting snippet turned up in the NME:
Meanwhile, Symposium bass player Wojtek is collaborating with Tanita Tikaram, helping her write tracks for her new album. The band's spokesman said: "They've always been big fans of hers, then she went to see them in Oxford."
February 2nd 1997 - At last some news from Tanita, the following was sent to people who had been subscribers to the now defunct Tanita Tikaram Information Service. It was written sometime towards the end of 1996 but only received by people in the second half of January.
SPECIAL BULLETIN FROM TANITA TIKARAM
Tanita sends many many apologies to all the fans who have been patiently waiting for news.
Tanita is very well and happy having left Warners and Asgard and is currently working on new songs and concentrating on moving into her new home.
Tanita is working at the moment in collaboration with a fantastic Italian producer (whose background encompasses everything from classical to dance) on a new album due out next year.
Tanita has also recently recorded two guest vocals one for the group MOODSWINGS and their version of Bob Marley's REDEMPTION SONG and a duet with a young Italian singer: a bi-lingual, Euro-friendly love song. Tanita will probably be performing at The Forum, Kentish Town, London, on the 5th/6th Dec. with MOODSWINGS depending on whether her sore throat improves.
Tanita would like you to know that her latest album, THE BEST OF TANITA TIRARAM, released by Warner Music U.K. Ltd. contains a new track that she is very happy with, I THINK OF YOU which is a cover of E PENSO A TE a BATTISTI-MOGOL song.
Warner Music U.K. Ltd. have also released a remix of TWIST IN MY SOBRIETY as a single. From the beginning Tanita didn't feel as if TWIST would benefit from re-mixing and was not happy with the result which was released without her authority.
As soon as the administrative backup is available, Tanita will start up the fan club again as she has kept all your details on database.
Thankyou for your continuing support, it is more than appreciated.
MUCH LOVE
tanita.
